No. 3 Seed Colorado State Holds Off No. 6 TCU in Quarterfinal Match of 2006 MWC Volleyball Championship

LAS VEGAS - The third-seeded Colorado State Rams (18-9) held off the TCU Horned Frogs Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Conference Tournament held in Las Vegas, Nev. The Cox Pavilion crowd witnessed the sixth-seeded Horned Frogs nearly pull off an upset of the Rams. The Rams advance to the semifinals to play the winner of the No. 2 BYU vs. No. 7 San Diego State quarterfinal. CSU won the match with scores of 33-31, 30-32, 30-28, 30-16.

CSU was paced offensively by Jaime Strauss, who collected a double-double with 24 kills and 12 digs. Strauss was joined by Katherine Whitney and Tonya Mokelki in the double-digit kill department as they threw down 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Ashley Fornstrom helped the CSU offensive out by dishing out 53 assists.

Defensively, the Rams were led by double-digit dig outings from Whitney (13), Strauss (12) and Katelin Batten (10). At the net the Rams had four players rack up four kills with Strauss, Ashley Fornstrom, Mekana Barnes and Tessa Nelson providing the defense against TCU's attack.

TCU was led by LeMeita Smith's 15 kill effort, while she was closely followed by Anna Vaughn's 10. Nirelle Hampton dished out 44 assists in the defeat.

The Horned Frogs had three players register 10 or more digs with Calli Corley topping out at 15. Katelyn Blackwood and Loren Barry registered 10 apiece.

In game one, TCU had five opportunities to put the game away, but CSU was resilient and fought off the loss en route to taking the stanza. Game two, was similar to the first, but the Frogs managed to even the game-score at one to one before intermission. CSU came out strong in the third and fourth frames to take the match.
