The third-seeded BYU Cougars held off an upset bid by the sixth-seeded New Mexico Cougars by a 3-2 margin in quarterfinal action in the Mountain West Conference Volleyball Championship Thursday in Las Vegas. The Cougars (21-6) had to rally from a two games to one deficit to defeat the Lobos (16-13). With the victory, BYU advances to Friday's semifinal match against the winner of the second quarterfinal match Thursday. BYU will play either #2 UNLV or #7 Wyoming at 3:30 pm PST.

The Cougars out-hit the Lobos by a .268 to .166 margin. BYU hit no worse than .200 in all five of its games. The Cougars hit well, when needed, as they smashed a .417 hitting efficiency in game four and .316 in the decisive game five.

New Mexico, on the other hand, hit no better than .273 (game three). The Lobos were held below .190 in the remaining four games, including lowly .081 in game two and .000 in game five.

BYU was led by double-doubles from Chelsea Goodman, Erica Lott and Amy Schlauder. Goodman and Lott combined kills and digs, while Schlauder paired assists and digs.

Goodman and Lott were two of five Cougars to amass 10 or more kills in the match, as Goodman's 21 were a match-high. Lott followed closely behind with 18 of her own. Ashton Hanson (15), Rachel Dyer (14), Bryn Porter (12) rounded out the quintet.

Schlauder dished out a match-high 63 assists for BYU, while the Cougars had 71 in the match.

On the defensive side of the net, BYU had five players in dig double-figures. Annie Pinegar led the way with 18, while Schlauder (14), Porter (13), Lott (12) and Goodman (11) followed suit.

At the net, Hanson put back nine Lobo attacks. Lott had six blocks (one solo) and Dyer had five.

UNM was led by offensively by Lisa Meeter's 20 kills. Rose Morris (12), Kerri Beck (11) and Jeanne Fairchild (10) joined Meeter in the double-digit club.

Jade Michaelson helped the Lobo offensive with 50 assists and even threw down four kills, as well.

Gayle Tripp led the Lobos in digs with 26 and aced a match-high five serves.

Beck was responsible for nine blocks (four solo), while Michaelson had five.
