No. 8 New Mexico Advances to Quarterfinals with 3-0 Win Over No. 9 Air Force Jeanne Fairchild records 13 kills for New Mexico.
Nov. 22, 2006 LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The New Mexico Lobos (10-19) swept the Air Force Falcons (3-25) in Wednesday's Mountain West Conference Tournament first round match and earned the right to move to quarterfinal action against top-seeded Utah Thursday night. The eighth-seeded Lobos used a highly effective offensive to get past the ninth-seeded Falcons at the Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas, Nev. UNM hit .483 for the match and no worse than .444 in any game to take the match with game-scores of 30-19, 30-13, 30-19. New Mexico tallied only six errors in the match with two in each of the three games. The Lobos' kill tallies jumped up by two each game with 14 in the first, 16 in the second and 18 in the third. Overall, the Lobos registered 48 kills to Air Force's 24. The Falcons hit .023 in the match. The Lobos offense was paced by Jeanne Fairchild's 13 kills and .632 hitting efficiency. Kelly Therkelsen followed closely behind in the kill department as she tallied 11, while hitting .579. Anna Lehne fell one kill shy of hitting in double-digits with her nine and hit .615 for the match. Sarah Kwasigroch dished out 32 of UNM's 43 assists, while digging out six Air Force attacks. Jennifer Heasty served up a match-high five aces and hit double-figures in digs with 10. Air Force was led offensively by Katie Batchelder's eight kills. Helping the Falcons to 22 assists were 10 set by Kim Kallabis. Defensively, 11 players registered a dig with Kristina Stewart leading the team with five.
The Lobos game-time against Utah will start 40-minutes after the conclusion of the fourth-seeded UNLV and fifth-seeded Wyoming match at 4:00 p.m.
