MWC Announces 2007 Women's Tennis All-Conference Awards BYU's Anastasia Surkova, UNLV's Elena Gantcheva named Co-Players of the Year
April 25, 2007 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Mountain West Conference announced its 2006-07 All-Conference team and individual awards for women's tennis today. The MWC awards are selected by the league's nine head coaches.
BYU junior Anastasia Surkova and UNLV junior Elena Gantcheva were named MWC Co-Players of the Year after posting identical 7-1 records in MWC matches. Currently ranked 66th nationally, Gantcheva tallied an 18-7 record this season, all at No. 1 singles. Surkova, ranked 89th nationally, registered a 29-7 overall record this season, including an 11-3 mark at the No. 1 position while aiding the Cougars' run to a share of the regular-season MWC title.
TCU's Nina Munch-Soegaard earned Freshman of the Year honors after helping the Horned Frogs to a share of the regular-season MWC title. Currently ranked 99th nationally, Munch-Soegaard posted a 23-7 record from the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 positions.
BYU head coach Craig Manning garnered MWC Coach of the Year accolades after guiding the Cougars to an 18-6 overall record and a share of the regular-season MWC title with a 7-1 mark in conference play.
TCU had a league-high four singles players on the All-MWC team, followed by BYU, New Mexico and San Diego State with two each and Air Force, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming with one apiece. BYU had two doubles teams collect All-MWC honors, while Colorado State, New Mexico, TCU, UNLV and Utah each had one.
