2006 MWC Tennis Championships Continue with Quarterfinals on Thursday

Wyoming advances to women's quarterfinals Thursday with first round win vs. Air Force

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Wyoming junior Amy Senko outlasted Air Force freshman Meghan Kiser (6-4, 4-6, 7-6 [7-5]) at No. 6 singles to give the Cowgirls a 4-3 edge in the first round of the Mountain West Conference Championships. The teams were knotted at 3-3 as the No.6 singles match began the third set. Senko's win sends the Cowgirls into a quarterfinal match vs. No. 1 seed TCU on Thursday. Men's and women's quarterfinal matches are set to begin Thursday morning at Barnes Tennis Center.

The Falcons took the doubles point to start the match, winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. The Air Force No. 1 duo of Kat Bushey and Christine Abayan improved to 18-9 in dual matches this season after defeating Wyoming's Andrea House and Karolina Rowinski (8-1).

Bushey won the No. 1 singles point and improved to 14-12 on the year with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Rowinski. Wyoming's Patricia Chien took the No. 2 singles match from Lauren Wilson (6-4, 6-4), while Corina Lazar defeated Kelly Morgan (6-3, 6-1) at No. 4 singles and Jamie Nelson defeated Erika Shortridge (6-2, 7-5) at No. 5 singles to account for the other three Wyoming points. Air Force freshman Christine Abayan took the No. 3 singles match from Andrea House, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, setting up the deciding point between Senko and Kiser.

San Diego State University hosts the 2006 Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Championships April 26-29 at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego. This marks the third time in conference history that the championships are held together. Barnes Tennis Center opened in 1997. The 4.5 million dollar facility was made possible with generous public and private donations.

 

 

The winner of the Mountain West Conference Tournament receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
