MWC Weekly Tennis Awards TCU's Mlendea and UNLV's Gantcheva net honors
March 28, 2006 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - TCU's Andrei Mlendea and UNLV's Elena Gantcheva have been named the Mountain West Conference men's and women's Tennis Players of the Week, respectively. A sophomore from Oradea, Romania, Mlendea knocked off eight-ranked Jerry Makowski 6-3, 7-6 (4) in No. 1 singles as the No. 32 Horned Frogs defeated No. 22 Texas A&M, marking his second victory over a top 10 opponent this season. Mlendea also teamed with Cosmin Cotet to defeat the Aggies in No. 2 doubles play. A sophomore from Sofia, Bulgaria, Gantcheva posted a 3-0 mark at No. 1 singles last week, helping the Rebels to a 2-1 start in MWC matches. Gantcheva, ranked No. 22 in the nation in singles, defeated 18th-ranked Olga Boulytcheva of BYU (3-6, 6-0, 7-5), Utah's Elizabeth Ferris (6-1, 6-2) and San Diego State's Dita Hauerlandova (6-0, 6-1) as the 63rd-ranked Rebels upset the 36th-ranked Aztecs.
