USAFA, Colo. - The 31st-ranked BYU Cougars captured their third Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championship in four years Saturday with a 4-1 victory over UNLV in the title match at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. BYU, the top seed at the tournament, improved to 21-6 and earned the MWC's automatic bid to the 2007 NCAA Tournament. The Cougars, winners of 19 of their last 21 dual matches, have now won four conference tournament titles in the eight-year history of the MWC.

BYU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by winning two of the three doubles matches. The Cougars' No. 3 team of Kristina Doerr and Sofia Holden finished the tournament with a perfect 3-0 record after defeating Claire Smith and Alisa Razina, 8-2. BYU's No. 1 team of Jenny Miccoli and Anastasia Surkova, ranked 48th in the country, clinched the point with an 8-3 win over the nation's 20th-ranked team of Elena Gantcheva and Kristina Nedeltcheva. The No. 2 match was then halted with UNLV leading, 6-4.

In a battle of the 2007 MWC Co-Players of the Year, BYU's Anastasia Surkova put the Cougars up 2-0 by downing Elena Gantcheva, 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 1 position. Surkova, who is ranked 89th in the country in singles, improved to 31-7 overall this season. Gantcheva, the 66th-ranked player in the nation, fell to 19-9 in singles play.
