No. 1 seed TCU ran its streak to 10 straight victories vs. conference teams with a 4-1 win over No. 5 seed New Mexico in the Mountain West Conference Tennis Championship women's semifinals. With the victory, both the TCU men's and women's tennis teams will appear in the MWC Championship matches on Saturday. TCU is the fifth MWC institution in the last six years to send a men's and women's team into the conference finals, joining UNLV (2001), San Diego State (2002, 2003), BYU (2001, 2005) and New Mexico (2004).
The Lobos jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match after taking the doubles point, but TCU answered with singles victories at No. 2, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6. New Mexico's tandem of Maja Kovacek and Iva Gersic outlasted Helena Besovic and Ana Cetnik 9-8 (6) at No. 1 doubles to give the Lobos a point after the teams split No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Kovacek and Gersic are now 26-4 on the year in doubles play.
Gloriann Lopez gave the Frogs their first point of the match with a win at No. 6 singles over Jennifer Ryba (6-0, 6-1). MWC Freshman of the Year Anna Sydorska followed with a win at No. 3 singles for the Frogs, defeating Nora Quintal (6-3, 6-1). Besovic defeated Gersic at No. 2 singles (6-2, 6-2) and Kewa Nichols downed Lucy Scott at No. 5 singles to account for TCU's team scoring.
TCU will face two-time defending tournament champion BYU in the MWC Championship finals Saturday at 3 p.m. PT at Barnes Tennis Center. The Frogs defeated the Cougars, 6-1, in regular season play April 7.
