No. 5 seed New Mexico escaped with a 4-3 win over No. 4 San Diego State to advance to the Mountain West Conference Tennis Championship women's semifinals. The teams waited out several rain delays on Thursday before completing the match Friday at Aztec Tennis Center.
With the match tied at 3-3, New Mexico's Ola Abou-Zekry and San Diego State's Milana Yusupov squared off in the deciding match at No. 4 singles Thursday night, but were forced to suspend competition and the pending outcome due to rain. After the players traded the first two sets, Abou-Zekry held a 5-0 lead in the third set Thursday night and completed a 6-1 victory in the final set in today's conclusion of the match, giving UNM the win.
The Lobos picked up the doubles point to start the match as Maja Kovacek and Iva Gersic defeated Sisse Nielsen and Dita Hauerlandova at No. 1 doubles (8-2), while UNM's Lucy Scott and Abou-Zekry moved past Eliska Krausova and Alesya Vidov at No. 2 doubles (8-5). Kovacek and Gersic improved to 25-4 on the year in doubles play. Gersic is also a team-best 16-3 in dual-match singles competition after defeating Vidov at the No. 2 spot. UNM also picked up the No. 5 singles point with Scott's third-set win over Nielsen, while the Aztecs earned points at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 6.
New Mexico faces No. 1 seed TCU on Friday in the semifinals at Barnes Tennis Center.
