Utah Blanks BYU in Quarterfinals of MWC Women's Tennis Championships Utes will meet top-seeded TCU in Friday's semifinals
April 24, 2008 FORT WORTH, Texas - Fourth-seeded Utah posted a 4-0 shutout win over No. 5 BYU on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the 2008 Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championships at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. The Utes improved to 15-8 overall this season with the win. Utah took the early 1-0 advantage with doubles wins at the top two positions. The 38th-ranked Wyoming pair of Emily Kwok and Elizabeth Ferris began with an 8-5 win over the 48th-ranked BYU duo of Anastasia Surkova and Jennifer Miccoli at the top spot. After the BYU tandem of Dolly Chang and Chie Hayasaka posted an 8-6 victory over Leigh Walsh and Karine Bourdages at the No. 3 position, the Ute duo of Erin Monson and Andrea Maughan answered with a 9-7 defeat of Kristina Doerr and Ellie Carney to clinch the doubles point. Utah posted three straight-set victories in singles play to capture the win. Monson led off with a 6-3, 6-2 defeat of Hayasaka at the No. 3 position to put the Utes up 2-0 in the match. Leigh Walsh followed with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Elizaveta Ezhova at the No. 4 slot, while senior Elizabeth Ferris clinched the victory with a 7-6(4), 6-3 decision over No. 53 Surkova at the top spot.
