May 10, 2006

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The All-Mountain West Conference Softball awards as selected by the league's six head coaches were announced today in conjunction with the start of the Mountain West Conference Softball Championship in Las Vegas, Nev. The championship begins tomorrow (Thursday, May 11) and runs through Saturday, May 13, at the Eller Media Softball Stadium on the campus of UNLV.

BYU senior Ianeta Le'i was named Player of the Year for the second time in her career (2004), while San Diego State sophomore Christina Ross captured the Pitcher of the Year award, and teammate Erin Floros garnered Freshman of the Year acclaim. The Aztecs' Kathy Van Wyk collected her second MWC Coach of the Year honor after leading her team to a first-place finish.

Le'i, an Oahu, Hawaii, native, led the league with a .540 batting average in MWC play to help her team to its second 40-win season. She tallied a league-leading 11 home runs, 38 RBI, a slugging percentage of 1.127, and an on-base percentage of .603. She currently ranks first in the nation for RBI, 18th in batting average and 12th for home runs. Le`i also tied a school record for home runs in a season with 20 this year. Defensively, she turned in a .979 fielding percentage from the first-base position. Le'i joins San Diego State's Celena Velasquez as two of only four players in Mountain West history to be named all-conference four straight years.

Ross, from Santa Clarita, Calif., went 8-2 in conference play, including seven complete games. She leads the MWC in ERA (1.55), opposing batting average (.239), and strikeouts (60). She also ranks in the top-five in four other categories, including innings pitched (67.2, second), batters struck out looking (15, third), wins (8, second) and games started (9, tie third). She currently ranks 39th in the nation for her overall ERA (1.16).

Floros, a San Diego, Calif., product, is second in the Mountain West in batting average (.491), on-base percentage (.578) and doubles (6). Overall, she leads SDSU in batting average (.397), slugging percentage (.570), on-base percentage (.486) hits (48), doubles (12) and total bases (69). As a freshman, Floros started 40-of-41 games for the Aztecs. Defensively, she turned in a .983 fielding percentage from the catcher position in league play.

The 20-member all-conference team includes five players each from regular-season champion San Diego State and runner-up BYU, four players from Utah, three players from Colorado State, two players from New Mexico and one from UNLV.
