Mountain West Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week

Colorado State's Rebecca Penland and San Diego State's Christina Ross Earn the Awards

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Colorado State sophomore Rebecca Penland and San Diego State lefthander Christina Ross have been named Mountain West Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

Penland, from Riverside, Calif., led the Rams to a 2-2 record last week against San Diego State and UNLV. She finished the weekend with a .500 batting average (7-for-14), recorded a double, and had a home run with five RBI and two runs scored. She also had a .786 slugging percentage and .563 on-base percentage. In game two of the doubleheader against the Aztecs, Penland recorded the only two RBI for the Rams on her two-out double to center field. She finished 2-for-3 in the first game against UNLV with an RBI and a run scored and 3-for-5 in the second game with two RBI and a run scored. In MWC play, Penland is batting .367 with six doubles, a home run and 10 RBI.

Ross, hailing from Santa Clarita, Calif., went 4-0 last weekend with a 0.30 ERA over 23 innings. She allowed just 12 hits, only two for extra-bases, and seven walks. Ross pitched three complete games, including a shutout over New Mexico on Sunday, while striking out 27 and limiting her opponents to a .148 batting average on the week. She tossed a complete game in the Aztecs' victory over Colorado State on Friday with nine strikeouts and allowed one unearned run on four hits and a walk. She came back in the nightcap and pitched two perfect innings with two strikeouts to earn the win in San Diego State's 3-2 victory. On Saturday against the Lobos, Ross gave up her lone earned run of the weekend on five hits, all singles, and five walks in the team's 2-1 win over New Mexico, adding seven strikeouts. She finished the weekend with a three-hit shutout, striking out nine and allowing just two baserunners (walk and single) over the first six innings in San Diego State's win against New Mexico, 1-0.
