Mountain West Conference Announces Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week New Mexico's Katie Gilmore and Utah's Ashley Smuda receive the award
April 29, 2008 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New Mexico sophomore Katie Gilmore and Utah sophomore righthander Ashley Smuda have been named Mountain West Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. Gilmore, from Phoenix, Ariz., led New Mexico to a 2-1 record last week, hitting .778 with four doubles in three games. Gilmore went a perfect 3-for-3 against New Mexico State in the Rio Grande Rivalry and batted 4-for-4 against Colorado State in game one of a doubleheader, recording three doubles and two RBI vs. the Rams. For the week, Gilmore went 7-for-9 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored while starting every game at second base for the Lobos. Smuda, hailing from Scottsdale, Ariz., went 3-0 in three appearances for Utah last week. The sophomore entered the first game of a doubleheader against UNLV in the third inning with the Utes down 6-0. She surrendered just one run and two hits in five innings with nine strikeouts to lead Utah to an 8-7 win over the Rebels. Smuda's performance earned her a start in game two of the twinbill and she went on to strike out seven in the 3-2, complete-game victory. She pitched all eight innings in the second game of a doubleheader vs. San Diego State, striking out nine. After giving up a run in the first inning, Smuda allowed only one other runner to reach second base the remainder of the game in a 2-1 Ute victory.
