Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week

UNLV's Bean and SDSU's Ross honored

March 18, 2008

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNLV senior Stephanie Bean and San Diego State senior lefthander Christina Ross have been named Mountain West Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

Bean, from Redding, Calif., helped UNLV to a 4-1 record in the UNLV Round Robin this weekend. Bean led the Rebels with her .733 batting average, 11 hits and seven runs. She tallied three, three-hit games, and had at least one hit in all five contests. In the Rebels first game vs. Utah Valley, she went 3-for-3 with three runs scored. In game two vs. UVU, she led off the fifth with a double and wound up scoring on a grand slam. In the third contest vs. UVU, Bean went 3-for-3 with an RBI-single in the third and also scored a run. In the second game vs. Nebraska, Bean went 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI-single. She scored UNLV's first run in the game and later came across for the team's fourth tally.

Ross, a Santa Clarita, Calif., native, posted a 2-1 record to help SDSU to a 4-1 mark at the San Diego Classic II. The senior pitched a combined 21 innings over the three games with a 0.67 ERA. All three games were complete games, including a shutout win over No. 5/5 Texas A&M. She struck out 25 against four walks for a 6.25 strikeout-to-walk ratio and limited her opponents, all who were nationally ranked at some point this season, to a .228 batting average. Ross gave up just one run on seven hits over nine innings in SDSU's 2-1 win over Cal State Fullerton on Friday. She had 10 strikeouts without a walk, while allowing seven hits. Ross came back the next day and gave up one run on six hits over six innings in the tough luck 1-0 loss to Long Beach State, while not allowing a walk while registering five strikeouts. She also pitched the next game of the night against the fifth-ranked Aggies and struck out 10 over six innings for the complete game shutout.
