LAS VEGAS, Nev. - In game nine of the Mountain West Softball Tournament, No. 1 seed San Diego State (33-12) defeated No. 2 seed BYU (42-20), 11-7, behind Taryin Casillas' four RBI. With the victory, San Diego State advances to the finals Saturday, May 13 at 6:05 p.m. (PDT). San Diego State struck first as MWC Freshman of the Year Erin Floros singled to left field. Megan McDonald followed that performance with an RBI double to give the Aztecs an early 1-0 lead. After a scoreless second stanza, the Cougars tied the score with Andrea Ramirez's 32nd RBI of the season. The Aztecs took control of the game in the bottom of the third inning. Meagan Hartung scored on a single by Tamani Wells, as she rounded the bases off a Monica Alnes RBI. With Alnes on first and Floros on second, BYU's Brooke Boyce-Humbert entered the game. SDSU's Taryin Casillas took advantage of the new pitcher and nailed a three-run shot to left field to give the Aztecs a 5-1 lead at the end of the third inning.
The Cougars countered the attack in the top of the fourth inning, cutting the Aztecs' lead to four. Emi Snow reached first on a base on balls. Two batters later, Jodi Norton singled to centerfield to plate Snow and put the score at 6-2.
Four singles by Tracee Hoch, Snow, Ianeta Le'i and Ashlyn Russell lessened the gap to two runs in the top of the fifth inning. The Aztecs countered the Cougars attack by capitalizing on two errors by BYU. Singles by Bree Boyer and Casillas, including her fourth RBI of the game, gave SDSU a five run advantage heading into the sixth inning. BYU continued to chip away at San Diego State's lead, as Norton led off the inning with a double. She advanced on a single by Hoch. The Cougars once again cut the Aztecs lead to two runs as Ramirez tallied her fourth RBI of the game with a three-run shot to left field, leaving the score at 9-7. The Aztecs continued their offensive spurt as Alnes drilled her second hit of the game over the left field fence to score two runs and increase SDSU's lead to four, leaving the inning up 11-7. Celena Velasquez retired three of the four batters in the top of the seventh to seal the victory for the Aztecs. SDSU's Christina Ross earned the win, moving her record to 16-8. BYU's Summer Tobias falls to 25-11 on the season. |
