In game six of the Mountain West Softball Tournament, No. 2 seed BYU (41-20) defeated No. 5 seed Colorado State (26-27), 3-1, as the Cougars scored all three of their runs in the fourth inning to back a solid start by Summer Tobias in the circle. With the victory the Cougars move on to the semifinals Friday, May 12 at 7 p.m. (PDT) against No. 1 seed San Diego State.

BYU broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring the first three runs of the game on a run-scoring single from Paige Paramore and then Tracee Hoch hit a single with the bases loaded and two outs that scored two.

"We're still not hitting the ball the way we are capable of hitting it," said BYU Head Coach Gordon Eakin. "It's not that surprising in championship play because everyone steps up their game a little bit. I'm still waiting for our bats to breakout and hopefully they will breakout tonight against some very good pitching, which is a little bit more of a challenge. Colorado State is a scrappy team and gave us everything we could handle. I'm just happy we got the win."

CSU cut into the lead in the top of the fifth inning when Lauren Cusick hit a two-out single down the right-field line that scored Tara Harbert, making the score 3-1. Runners were on the still on the corners for the Rams and Julia Kloppe hit a smash to Cougar third baseman Jodi Norton, who calmly knocked it down and threw out Kloppe to end the inning. Harbert finished the game going 4-4 for the Rams with four singles.

"We competed well today, we just fell short," said Colorado State Head Coach Mary Yori. "They got the key hits to drive in a couple runs. I thought Klabough pitched well and I thought we played good defense. Summer (Tobias) pitched a good game against us and shut us down. She had her change-up working and we couldn't put hits together."

Tobias (20-8) tossed a complete game in the circle, allowing just one run on nine hits in pitching the Cougars to the semifinals. Outside of the fifth inning, Tobias never really had trouble, retiring the side in order in the second and sixth innings, striking out six and walking none.

CSU starter Kim Klabough (14-9) pitched a similar game, only running into trouble in the fourth inning, but the three runs were too much for the Rams to overcome. Klabough gave up the three runs on eight hits while striking out two and walking one.
