In game five of the Mountain West Softball Tournament, No. 4 seed UNLV (26-36) defeated No. 6 seed New Mexico (23-31), 4-0, behind Rebel starter Shannon Crisp's complete game shutout and three-run home run in the sixth inning. With the victory the Rebels move on to the semifinals Friday, May 12 at 4:30 p.m. (PDT) against No. 3 seed Utah.

Crisp (11-16) tossed a strong came in the circle, striking out five and walking one while giving up just five hits to the Lobos on the afternoon. It was the eighth complete game of the year for Crisp and her first solo shutout of the season.

"Shannon Crisp did a good job of coming through," said Rebel Head Coach Lonni Alameda. "We got the right plays at the right time. Errors have been a big issue for us and when that gets exploited, it's tough to bounce back. We need to be disciplined at the plate, a 1-0 game against Utah won't win it."

UNLV scored the first run of the game when Kendall Fearn hit a one-out double to the left-center gap and then she scored one out later on a double by Caitlyn Paus to the same spot that gave the Rebels a 1-0 lead.

UNM threatened to tie the game, putting runners on first and second with no one out in the top of the sixth inning but Crisp worked out of the jam to preserve the Rebel lead. She got a ground out for the first out, a foul out and then UNM leftfielder Ashley Allen lined out softly to end the inning.

After the Lobos failed to capitalize in the top of the frame, the Rebels' lead ballooned to 4-0 in the bottom of the sixth, when Crisp hit a three-run home run to left field, her eighth home run of the year. Brittany Freight led off the frame with a single and then Maggie Livreri drew a walk off of Lobo starter Jen Mendenhall, bringing Crisp to the plate.

"It was disappointing," said Lobo Head Coach Kim Newbern. "I feel like we are a stronger team than what showed today. We couldn't push runs today. Jen Mendenhall was doing a great job holding them and then she threw the one bad pitch but did a good job of keeping her composure. The deficit just seemed a little big at that point. My team put it all out there and that's all you can ask."

Mendenhall (8-14) pitched well in defeat, giving up four runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking four in working the complete game.
