Rams Take Two On Final Day of Hilton Las Cruces Classic

Rams defeated Portland State 5-1 and New Mexico State 7-4.

The Colorado State University softball team improved to 3-3 on the season with two wins Sunday to close out the Hilton Las Cruces Classic. Colorado State opened up the day with a 5-1 victory over Portland State followed by a 7-4 win over host New Mexico State.

The Rams jumped out to an early lead, scoring all of their runs in the first two innings. Senior Tara Harbert led off, singling to first and stealing second. Junior Jessica Strickland followed with a double scoring Harbert. After freshman Renee Welty singled through the left side, sophomore Lauren Cusick hit a double to bring in Welty and Strickland. Freshman Kim Klabough finished the inning with single to score Cusick.

Senior Katie Dean led the Rams in the second inning with a home run to center field, the fourth of her career. The Rams held Portland State off the board until the bottom of the seventh.

Klabough picked up the complete game victory, allowing one run on seven hits and striking out six.

The Rams beat New Mexico State in their second game of the day to avenge their loss in the season opener. Strickland homered in the bottom of the first to put the Rams on the board. The Aggies responded with one run in the second.

The Rams took over in the third, bringing in five runners. Klabough walked following Cusick's double to left center to lead off. Dean hit a single to right field, scoring Cusick. Klabough scored on junior Brittany Huerta's fielder's choice before freshman Shannon Causgrove hit a home run to left field to score Huerta and Dean.

 

 

Strickland picked up her first win on the season, pitching five innings and allowing four runs while striking out two. Klabough pitched two innings in relief and allowed only one hit.

The Rams will travel to Las Vegas, Nev. for the Desert Classic this weekend. They will open with two games on Friday versus Notre Dame and Central Michigan. Saturday they will face Oregon and Cal Poly closing with Oregon State on Sunday.
