UNM Softball Upsets No. 3 UCLA, 13-1

Ty Singleton collects his first UNM win in stellar fashion

Feb. 10, 2007

Stats

TEMPE, Ariz. --- The New Mexico softball team pounded out 13 runs on 12 hits to upset the third-ranked UCLA Bruins, 13-1, Saturday night in five innings. Junior pitcher Kelly Ninemire dominated in the circle throwing five innings allowing a run and holding UCLA to two hits. Sophomore Samantha Hughes and freshman Katie Gilmore both hit their first home runs of the year and led UNM at the plate. Hughes went 2-for-2 with two runs and three RBI, while Gilmore had two hits in four trips to the disk. The Lobos pick up their first victory of the season and move to 1-3 on the season. The upset of UCLA (1-3) was the first victory in the Ty Singleton era at UNM.

"UCLA is a great opponent and we have tremendous respect for its program," said Singleton. "We are very excited about the overall effort. When you face a team the caliber of UCLA it's easy to tighten up but we remained aggressive in every aspect of the game to the very end. We had great at-bats and made plays defensively early to set the tone. There are so many people that had a great game and it was truly a team accomplishment. This is a credit to the team and their hard work."

More information about tonight's game will be posted on www.GoLobos.com. For any immediate questions contact Chris Deal in the athletic media relations office at 405-612-0252. The Lobos continue the Kajikawa Classic Sunday against Florida at 11 a.m.
