Cougars Win Double-Header, Improve to 3-0

Angeline Quiocho knocked a two-run home run.

Feb. 9, 2007

St. George, Utah -- The BYU softball team (3-0) came away from day two of the Red Desert Classic with two more victories beating Utah State (1-1) 5-1 and Southern Utah (0-2) 14-2, on Friday in St. George.

"These were good wins all the way through the line up," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "One through 14 performed when they were called upon throughout the day. We had some innings where we just kind of went through the motions. Fortunately, we're hard team to defend for seven innings."

Against Utah State, freshman Angeline Quiocho knocked a two-run home run over the outfield wall and past the fence several yards behind the wall. The hit gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second and gave Quiocho her first career homer in her first collegiate at-bat.

"I was very relaxed knowing that the pitcher didn't know me," Quiocho said. "I didn't think much up there. I don't have a care in the world when I'm [at bat]."

Aggies junior Heather Haak pulled her team within one with a two-out home run in the top of the fifth inning. BYU would strike back with a big sixth inning that put the game out of reach. After freshman pitcher Christie Zinanti retired the side in order in the top of the sixth, Tracee Hoch blasted a solo home run over left field. Later in the inning, with Emi Snow and Dani Urincho in scoring position, Eakin pinch hit Andi Ramirez for Christina Gwyn.

Two consecutive wild pitches from Stacey Ellingsworth allowed both Snow and Urincho to score for the game's final margin of 5-1.

BYU fell behind 1-0 early against Southern Utah, and the score remained that way until the third when the Cougars put together a six- run inning. With the bases loaded, Hoch hit a base clearing double. The next batter, Jodi Norton, drove in Hoch with a line drive to right field. After Urincho moved Norton to third with a double, a wild pitch enabled Norton to give BYU the 5-1 lead. Urincho scored the final run of the inning off a Monica Gonzales single.

Whiteley connected on a two-out double to left-center to get the Cougars' offense going once again in the fifth inning. Following Whiteley, Stephanie Platt stepped up to the plate and swatted one out of the park putting BYU ahead 8-1. Norton drove in Hoch yet again in the sixth inning.

In the top of the seventh, Shaylyn Jenkins and Norton hit the Cougars' second and third long balls of the game -- shots that drove in three runs for the 14-2 final.

Norton provided the crowd with the web gem of the day by snagging an over-the-head catch that gave the Thunderbirds their second out of the fourth inning. Zinanti won her debut as a Cougar, while Gwyn picked up her second win of the season.

The Red Desert Classic concludes Saturday with BYU taking on Utah Valley State College at 11 a.m. and then Loyola Marymount at 4 p.m.
