TEMPE, Ariz. - New Mexico softball dropped the first game of a doubleheader Saturday against No. 21 Fresno State, 8-1, in the Kajikawa Classic hosted by Arizona State University. The Lobos pushed across a run on five hits and were led by junior Lindsey Elcess who went 2-for-3 with an RBI. UNM falls to 0-3 with the loss and face No. 3 UCLA later today.

The Bulldogs took a quick 2-0 lead after scoring a run in the second and third innings. FSU scored its first run on a sacrifice fly by Kristin Sylvester to score Jenna Cervantes. Robin Mackin scored the only run in the third inning for the Bulldogs after hitting a solo home run to left center field.

The game remained 2-0 until the top of the fifth inning, when Lisa Marie Coronado extended the Bulldogs lead to 8-0 with a grand slam to right center field with two outs.

UNM came alive offensively late in the game with runners in scoring position in the fourth and fifth innings. The Lobos plated its only run in the fifth on an RBI single by Elcess.

Freshman Tori Rogers (0-1) started the game and pitched 4 2/3 innings. Rogers gave up six hits and four runs before being relieved by senior Caley Peterson. Peterson came to pitch the final 2 1/3 innings allowing four runs on five hits.

 

 

The Kajikawa Classic continues throughout the weekend in Tempe, Ariz. The Lobos have two games remaining in the tournament starting with UCLA tonight and concluding with Florida on Sunday at 11 a.m. For more information about UNM athletics visit www.GoLobos.com.
