TEMPE, Ariz. --- The No. 5 Arizona State Sun Devils plated three runs and received a stellar performance from Katie Burkhart on their way to a 3-0 victory over New Mexico Friday night in the Kajikawa Classic. The Lobos recorded two hits against Burkhart and battled against the softball powerhouse. UNM falls to 0-2 after the defeat, while ASU moves to 4-0.

UNM senior Caley Peterson (0-1) made her first appearance this season against ASU and went the distance taking the loss. Peterson threw seven innings holding the Sun Devils to three runs on six hits.

The Lobos were led at the plate by senior Amy Ray and true-freshman Katie Gilmore. Both went 1-for-3 and helped lead UNM against two tough opponents on opening day. Ray was 2-for-7 on the day and started both games at second base. Gilmore clubbed a two RBI double against Ohio State and finished the day with a .333 average.

Burkhart improved to 2-0 on the year after striking out 15 batters and pitching a complete game shutout. Jackie Vasquez led ASU at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Despite dropping both games on opening day, UNM competed against two respected and nationally recognized programs. The Lobos return to action on Saturday against Fresno State at 1 p.m. and national power UCLA at 5 p.m. For more information about UNM softball visit www.GoLobos.com.
