Feb. 9, 2008

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The Colorado State softball team improved to 3-1 to start the season, splitting two games at the Cathedral City Kickoff on Saturday near Palm Springs, Calif.

Colorado State began the day with a 5-3 setback against the UC Davis Aggies, but bounced back for a 3-2 win over the Winthrop Eagles.

"In the game against UC Davis we struggled to come up with a big hit when we needed it," said Head Coach Mary Yori.  "It was very positive to see our players rebound with a good game against some very tough pitching and a quality team in Winthrop."

Against UC Davis, the Rams got on the board first with an RBI ground-out by sophomore Kayla Kreutzman which scored sophomore Ashley Munoz from third. UC Davis answered in the bottom half of the inning with four runs of their own. The Aggies got their first run when sophomore pitcher Rebecca Penland gave up a bases-loaded walk to Jenny Corbett. UC Davis followed with back-to-back singles to left field to give the Aggies the 4-1 advantage and the Rams were never able to recover.

The Rams' fifth inning rally fell short and UC Davis added one more run in the bottom of the fifth to make the final score, 5-3.

Munoz went 3-for-3 with and RBI and a run scored. Sophomore pitcher Rebecca Penland started the game in the circle for the Rams and pitched 3.2 innings before senior Cayte Billman came in to relieve her.

Against Winthrop, The Rams were down 1-0 in the fifth inning when sophomore Robyn Mask singled to score junior Michelle Reynolds from second. With two outs, senior Lauren Cusick stepped up to the plate and hit a single to score sophomore Sarah Sullivan from third.

Colorado State added one more run to take a 3-1 lead in the seventh inning when freshman Ivory Allen scored from first base on a double by Cusick.

The Eagles scored one more time in the bottom of the seventh, but the Rams were able to close the door and win the game 3-2.

Cusick went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Junior pitcher Kim Klabough pitched the complete game and only gave up three hits while striking out seven.

The Rams conclude the Cathedral City Kickoff Sunday when against UC Riverside.  First pitch is schedule for 1 p.m. MT.
