Colorado State blanks Portland State, 4-0 Billman tosses one-hitter
Feb. 8, 2008
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Senior pitcher Cayte Billman (1-0) threw a complete-game, one-hit shutout as Colorado State improved to 2-0 at the Cathedral City Kickoff near Palm Springs, Calif., on Friday evening. Billman and the Rams blanked the 2006 Pacific Coast Conference champions, 4-0, thanks to a second-inning outburst that saw the game's only scoring. Sophomore center fielder Kayla Kreutzman drove in the eventual winning run with a one-out single to bring in junior catcher Shannon Causgrove, who singled to lead off and advanced to second on a bunt single by Billman. Sophomore second baseman Robyn Mask followed Kreutzman with a three-run homer to give the Rams some breathing room. The win comes on the heels of a season-opening 3-2 victory over No. 20 Oregon earlier in the day. Junior pitcher Kim Klabough hurled a complete game and struck out six batters, while sophomore Ashley Munoz lifted the Rams with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth. "We are definitely excited about this start to the season," said Head Coach Mary Yori. "We certainly have room for improvement, but it was great to have two pitchers (Billman and Klabough) throw such outstanding games to begin the season." The Rams look to build upon their early season success Saturday. CSU resumes play at the Cathedral City Kickoff with games against UC Davis and Winthrop. First pitch between the Rams and the Aggies is slated for 4 p.m. MT, followed by a 6:30 p.m. start against the Eagles.
