Rams' Bats Silenced In Season Opener

Rams held to just one hit in 4-0 loss to New Mexico State.

Feb. 9, 2006

The Colorado State University softball team (0-1) opened up the 2006 season on Thursday afternoon at New Mexico State (1-0) in Las Cruces, N.M., falling to the Aggies, 4-0. The Rams' offense was held to just one hit, coming off the bat of senior transfer Tara Harbert. Harbert also recorded a team-high five assists at second base for the Rams.

New Mexico State's pitcher, Sarah Seagraves, held the Rams to that one hit, coming in the top of the sixth inning. The Aggies jumped out in front of the Rams early in the contest, scoring once in the bottom of the first and second innings and never looked back.

Colorado State threatened in the second inning. Freshman Renee Welty led off the inning with a walk, and sophomore Lauren Cusick reached on an error by the third baseman with two outs. However, sophomore Julia Kloppe was unable to bring Welty home, grounding into a fielder's choice to end the inning.

That was as close as the Rams would get, as only one player, Harbert, would reach base for the remainder of the game.

New Mexico State added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth inning when shortstop Stephanie Herrera, who knocked a solo home run in the second inning, doubled in two runs to make the score 4-0. Herrera finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored.

Junior Jessica Strickland (0-1) picked up the loss. She pitched six innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, striking out three and allowing two walks. Seagraves (0-1) pitched the complete-game shutout for NMSU, allowing just one hit and striking out ten Rams in the contest.

The Rams are now 1-6 in season openers under head coach Mary Yori.
