No. 3 BYU Defeats No. 6 TCU, 2-0 BYU improves to 15-3-2 and advances to semifinals
Nov. 7, 2007 PROVO, Utah - 2007 MWC Women's Soccer Championships
No. 3 BYU defeated No. 6 TCU in the second quarterfinal match of the Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Championship with a pair of goals by Katie Larkin and Carolyn Swenson. The Cougars will advance to play No. 2 San Diego State in the semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 8 at 4 p.m. MT. The game will air live on The Mtn. With the win, BYU improves to 15-3-2 overall the year, while TCU falls to 9-10-0 to end its season. The win also marked the Cougars' first tournament win since 2003. Both teams battled back and forth, but headed into the locker rooms tied 0-0 at the half. The Cougars came out and attacked in the second half. Coming out of the break, Swenson sent a pass in front of the goal directly at Larkin. Larkin headed in the game-winner into the back of the net for her 13th goal of the season. "We just had to stay positive," said BYU Head Coach Jennifer Rockwood. "Everyone believed that the next shot was going in. We got out to the start we wanted and were able to create a lot of opportunities. We told them to keep working hard and believe it was going to happen, and then Katie [Larkin] finally put one in." With the game coming to a close and just under two minutes to play, TCU was on the attack. Swenson reversed the play of the ball and, with the Horned Frogs' keeper out of position, she slid the ball to the back of the net to record her first tally of the season. Unable to create scoring opportunities late in the game, TCU had five shots in the second half. The Cougars out shot the Horned Frogs, 28-9 and edged them in corner kicks, 3-1. In the last meeting between these two teams, BYU scored a season-high four goals against the Horned Frogs in a 4-1 victory in Provo.
