#3 UNLV Defeats #6 Wyoming, 1-0, With Last Second Goal UNLV improves to 9-10-1 and advances to semifinals
Nov. 1, 2006 SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - UNLV's Katie Carney scored with two seconds left in the game to give the Rebels a 1-0 win over Wyoming in the first game of the Mountain West Conference tournament. The Rebels improve to 9-10-1 and will play in the semifinal on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 4:30 p.m. The Cowgirls finished the season 7-9-3.
UNLV's Brie Kuhne took a free kick from 10 yards outside the box with 10 seconds remaining in the game. Captain Tanya Roberts tipped the ball in front of Wyoming goalkeeper Ashley Sheppard. Sheppard tried to clear the ball, but it landed in front of Carney. Carney, who scored the game-winner in last year's MWC championship game, booted the ball from the top of the box to give the Rebels the 1-0 win.
"Wyoming did a great job in the first half having some dangerous chances," noted UNLV's head coach Kat Mertz. "I think we played better in the last third of the game. It's a tournament game and anything can happen. We are very fortunate that the ball bounced out Katie Carney's way."
UNLV scored a last-second game-winner vs. Wyoming for the second time in the three games. The Rebels most recently achieved the feat when they scored with seven seconds left on Oct. 9, 2005, in Laramie, Wyo,
"I thought the first half we played really good soccer," noted UW's head coach Anne Moore. "We knocked the ball around and created some opportunities that we should have finished. We played with heart and we played tough, we just couldn't capitalize on our opportunities."
The teams battled back and forth for most of the game, with UNLV holding a slight advantage in shots, 28-20. Both teams had good looks, with the Cowgirls' Comfort Adetoye coming close twice in the first half, but stopped by UNLV goalkeeper Alicia Lugo. Lugo, a freshman keeper playing in her sixth career game for the Rebels, entered the game after starter Ciera Nero came out of the net with 15:38 remaining in the first half.
UNLV advances to the semifinal round on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 4:30 p.m. The Rebels will play #2 seed BYU.
