Women's Soccer Players of the Week BYU's Larkin and New Mexico's Ball and Wong honored
Oct. 1, 2007 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU junior forward Katie Larkin and New Mexico freshman forward Alexis Ball have been named Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Co-Offensive Players of the Week, while New Mexico sophomore goalkeeper Kiani Wong has been named the Defensive Player of the Week. Larkin, a native of Draper, Utah, had a hand in all four of BYU's goals over the weekend. Against Washington, Larkin scored two goals on only four shots on goal in the 2-1 victory. On Saturday vs. Montana, she assisted on the Cougars' first tally and scored the game-winning goal just one minute into the second half. It marked her seventh game-winning goal this season, which leads the MWC. Ball, an Albuquerque, N.M., native, scored two game-winning goals last week in both of New Mexico's 1-0 victories over Arizona State and Northern Arizona. Against ASU, Ball scored in the 25th minute on a cross from junior Krista Peterson. She fired a shot to the far post past a diving Sun Devil keeper. On Sunday, Ball struck in the 49th minute after beating the Lumberjacks' keeper one-on-one to defeat NAU, 1-0. She has scored a goal in four consecutive games and leads UNM in scoring. Wong, hailing from Honolulu, Hawaii, shutout Arizona State last week and improved to 3-1 overall. Wong recorded her second career shutout after facing 22 shots from ASU. She made nine game-saving stops, holding the Pac-10 program scoreless. Wong played the full 90 minutes in her third start of the year.
