Women's Soccer Players of the Week UNLV's Katie Carney and Alicia Lugo honored
Sept. 3, 2007 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNLV senior forward Katie Carney and sophomore goalkeeper Alicia Lugo have been named Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively. Carney, a native of Lake Forest, Calif., was involved in three of UNLV's four goals over the weekend to help the Rebels win both games of the UNLV adidas Classic. Against Cal State Fullerton, a team that is receiving votes in the NSCAA Top-25 poll, Carney scored both goals of the 2-0 win. Her first goal was a free kick from 35 yards out less then two minutes in the game and her second came in the 81st minute from 30 yards out. On Sunday vs. Arizona State, her corner kick into the box was headed in by teammate Amanda Forrester to give UNLV a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute. Carney's five points for the weekend leads the Rebels, and she is fourth all-time at UNLV in career points with 49. Lugo, a Lancaster, Calif., native, led UNLV to two victories over the weekend. She gave up just one goal while facing a total of 34 shots over 180 minutes of play. Lugo made 13 saves, including nine against Arizona State, the second-highest of her career. She also made four saves against Cal State Fullerton to post her third shutout in four games, dating back to the 2006 season.
