Utah Soccer Team Heads for South America Friday

Utes will play four games in Argentina and Uruguay

March 13, 2008

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's soccer team is traveling to South America Friday and will play four games in Argentina and Uruguay between March 17 and March 21.

"Some people go to California for warm weather and games in the spring," Utah head coach Rich Manning said. "We're just taking a little different route this year."

It is the first-ever international trip for the Utah women's soccer program. Manning said he believes the trip will be beneficial - both on and off the field - to the members of his team.

"One of the great qualities about being involved in soccer is that it is a global sport," Manning said. "It is a great way to connect with people from all over the world. It is always good to play as many competitive games as you can in the spring. These four extra games will be critical to our team this year. To play against players and teams with different styles will provide us with great lessons."

The Utes will play a pair of games in Buenos Aires on Monday. Utah will face River Plate at 10 a.m. local time and will then play a contest with a team from the University of Buenos Aires. By Wednesday, the Utes will be in Uruguay and will face Seleccion Uruguay at 11 a.m. that day. The South American schedule will wrap up Friday, March 21 when Utah takes on San Lorenzo de Almargo.

Coach Manning also expressed thanks to his superiors for helping to make the trip possible for his team.

"I am really grateful to (Utah athletic director) Chris Hill and the administration for their support in this part of our players' education," Manning said.

Fans can keep up with the Utes during their time in South America, both on www.UtahUtes.com and on the Utah Soccer Blog.
