No. 3 BYU Upsets No. 1 UNLV in Championship Final, 2-1 BYU earns automatic bid to NCAA Championship Final Box Score | 2007 MWC Women's Soccer Championships
Nov. 10, 2007 PROVO, Utah - No. 3 BYU upset No. 1 UNLV, 2-1, in the title game of the 2007 MWC Women's Soccer Championship. With the win, the Cougars (17-3-2) receive an automatic bid to the 2007 NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament. Katie Fellows led the way as she forced an own goal by UNLV (11-5-5) and scored unassisted in the second half. BYU claimed the MWC Tournament championship title for the first time since 2002. The Cougars achieved the feat in front of a standing-room-only crowd of 2,627 at South Stadium. UNLV entered the game as the two-time defending tournament champions. "This team has been dedicated to get back to this place, and I'm really proud," BYU Head Coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "It's a well deserved win for these girls. We've played a great season, we knew we had people that were up to the challenge, and we proved that today." The two teams came out hard at the beginning of the game, but neither team was able to capitalize on scoring opportunities. BYU booted seven shots against the Rebel defense, but the Cougars were unable to put the ball in the net. UNLV goalkeeper Alicia Lugo stopped three balls during the first half, while BYU goalkeeper Erica Woodbury stopped four shots. UNLV's closest opportunity to score came when Haley Partridge met Woodbury one-on-one. Woodbury came to the top of the box to make the save and keep the score at zero to end the half. A Rebel foul gave the Cougars a free kick in the 48th minute and Fellows headed the ball toward the goal from Carolyn Swenson's pass. The ball was stopped by Lugo and then deflected into the goal by Dani Morin. BYU extended its lead with a goal from Fellows, marking her third on the season. Fellows brought the ball out of the midfield and slid the ball just out of the reach of Lugo in the bottom left corner.
UNLV narrowed the Cougar lead with a penalty kick in the 72nd minute. Jessica Harmon-Carter fouled Katie Carney, UNLV's leading scorer, just inside the penalty area. Carney knocked the ball into the upper left corner of the net to put the score at 2-1. Despite a concerted effort, the Rebels were not able to equalize.
