First Half Dooms Utah Soccer in 4-2 Loss at Colorado

Buffaloes score four first-half goals

Sept. 6, 2007

Stats

BOULDER, Colo. - The Colorado women's soccer team scored three goals in the first 33 minutes against the University of Utah Thursday. The Buffaloes rode that early momentum to a 4-2 victory over the Utes in non-conference action.

CU's Michaela DeJesus scored off a corner kick just 52 seconds into the match, putting the Buffaloes on top 1-0.

"It went downhill from there," Utah head coach Rich Manning said.

Gianna DeSaverio and Nikki Marshall each scored for Colorado (2-0-1) in the next 32 minutes as the Buffaloes took control. CU added one more goal from Allison Kidd just before halftime to go into the intermission with a 4-0 lead.

Utah fought gamely in the second half, but it was too little too late. Junior Adele Letro scored her second goal of the season off an assist from sophomore Kelly Isleib in the 62nd minute to get the Utes on the scoreboard. Junior Katy Reineke added her second score of the season off another assist from Isleib to pull Utah back into the contest in the 76th minute.

The Utes had a couple chances to pull within one, but couldn't find the goal again. Utah put the ball in the back of the net at the horn, but the goal came after time expired, according to the officials.

"It didn't appear at the beginning of the game that we had the commitment or the mentality needed to compete," Manning said. "We played a very good team and they made us pay the price for that lack of focus.

"I was encouraged by the fact that we kept fighting and worked ourselves back into the game," Manning added. "Hopefully we can continue to play with that kind of competitiveness from here on out."

Utah (1-2-0) will be in action again Sunday at Washington State in Pullman, Wash.
