TCU earns first road victory with 3-1 win over Houston K.D. Waters, Ginny Hubbard and Lauren Pope score first career goals
Sept. 6, 2005 HOUSTON - The TCU Horned Frogs found themselves in an early 1-0 hole, but scored three unanswered goals en route to their second win of the 2005 season. Three different Frogs tallied goals for TCU and Katy Buchanan made nine saves to lead the Frogs to victory, including six in the first half. The Frogs made their opportunities count as they were outshot by the Cougars 15-9 in the contest. The Cougars had the first shot to break the scoreless tie seven minutes into the contest. The Cougars leading goal scorer, Sophia Mundy took a fed from Jessica Green and raced in towards the goal. She beat her defender and was one on one with Katy Buchanan, who stopped the point blank shot for her first save of the contest. The Cougars kept up the offensive pressure and capitalized in the 14th minute. They pushed the ball deep in their offensive zone, forcing a corner kick. On the ensuing kick, Mundy delivered a perfect feed to the head of Kristin Bay who knocked it past Buchanan for the 1-0 lead. TCU withstood the offensive onslaught from the Cougars and capitalized on its first shot of the game. The Frogs tied the game in the 34th minute on a long shot off the foot of Ginny Hubbard. Leslie Parkinson won the ball at midfield and passed it back to Hubbard who dribbled the ball towards goal. She beat her defender and took the shot from 30 yards out and blasted it over the head of Cougar goalkeeper, Stephanie Pucek. The hard work by the Frogs earned them the lead with 30 seconds remaining in the first half. Caroline Starns battled with her defender and was pulled down just outside the penalty area. K.D. Waters took the direct kick and shot it over the goalkeeper's head for the 2-1 lead and her first collegiate goal. The Frogs missed a great opportunity to get a three-goal lead when Angie Nickens hard shot bounced straight down off the top post and out of danger. The defense played a strong second half, limiting the Cougar shots to just seven shots and only one on goal. TCU withstood some early pressure in the second half and extended its lead in the 67th minute. The Frogs took the ball deep in the offensive. After a thrown in, Moran Lavi battled her defender and put a perfect feed right to the foot of Lauren Pope, who took the quick shot just outside the penalty box that went over Pucek's head for the 3-1 lead. With the win, the Frogs end a two-game skid and even their record at 2-2 on the season. TCU begins a three match homestand on Friday when they host the Horned Frog Invitational. The Frogs will square off against Boston University at 4:00 p.m. at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium on Friday.
