Granados and Sanchez Lead New Mexico to First Win of the Season

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.-Local products Terryn Granados and Bridgette Sanchez scored their first goals of the season to lead the University of New Mexico women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Eastern Washington University, Sunday afternoon at the UNM Soccer Complex. The Lobos improve to 1-1-1 on the season while the Eagles drop to 1-3-0.

Granados, a sophomore midfielder from Albuquerque, N.M., scored four minutes into the first half. Junior midfielder Kaela Kelly served an excellent cross to Granados to earn the assist. It was Granados' first career goal with UNM.

"It was awesome," said Granados. I couldn't have asked for anything more. Our team came out on fire for the first 10 minutes. It felt really good to finally get one in because we've really been needing that."

Sanchez's goal in the second half came at the 63rd minute. The junior forward from Rio Rancho, N.M. received another great serve from Kelly that was passed up the middle. Sanchez beat Eastern Washington's keeper from 10 yards out to find the back of the net and to push the Lobos to a 2-0 lead.

"It was a great pass from Kaela," said Sanchez "She split their defense and I was there. Hopefully, we have more confidence after this win. It wasn't a very pretty win, but we found it and that's what counts."

The Lobos showered the Eagles with 24 shots compared to EWU's five and had 11 on goal. New Mexico's senior goalkeeper Kristen Winters was credited with her 19th career shutout after playing the full 90 minutes and making two saves.

"This wasn't our best outing of the three games we've played, but we got the win," said UNM head coach Kit Vela. "We didn't play perfectly, but we played well enough to win. I was proud with how our younger players came in to sub for our older players. They never missed a beat and they were outstanding. It just shows how deep we are."

New Mexico will host the UNM Classic next weekend (Sept. 9-11) at the UNM Soccer Complex. The Lobos will take on Auburn (1-3-0) Friday night at 7 p.m. after the match between Syracuse and Arizona State at 4 p.m.
