No. 22 Utah Blows By Idaho 4-1 In Women's Soccer Adele Letro and Kim Lloyd both contribute a goal and an assist
Sept. 4, 2005 SALT LAKE CITY - Utah jumped on Idaho for three first-half goals to cruise to a 4-1 win at Ute Field on Sunday afternoon and remain undefeated at 4-0 on the season. The Utes, ranked No. 22 by Soccer Buzz magazine, put the pressure on Idaho (1-2-0) from the opening kickoff and scored their first goal in the seventh minute. Adele Letro laced a beautiful cross in front of the net for Amanda Feigt, who sent a short punch shot into the lower left side of the net. Letro, a freshman from Davis, Calif., had the favor returned to her in the 23rd minute. Kiley Jones floated a ball down the center of the field, which Letro chased down for a breakaway opportunity against Idaho keeper Lindsay Smith. Letro fired away from 10 yards out to put Utah ahead 2-0. Utah continued its excellent passing, leading to another goal in the 39th minute. Freshman Katy Reineke, the reigning Class 4A Player of the Year in Utah, connected with Kim Lloyd to set up a one-on-one. Lloyd slotted the ball from five yards out into the lower right corner of the frame for her second goal of the year. The Utes allowed their first goal of the season with just 15 seconds before halftime. Adriane Kehl floated a header over Ute keeper Ashley Mason into the upper right corner. It was the first goal against the Utes in just over 314 minutes this season.
The Utes outshot Idaho 14-5 in the first half. The Vandals were kept in the game thanks to a great effort by goalkeeper Lindsay Smith. She made five of her seven saves in the first half, pouncing on several point-blank shots. After the Vandals regrouped to play a stronger second half, Melissa Wayman closed out the scoring in the 76th minute. Lloyd crossed the ball in front of the goal to Wayman, who flicked it into the upper right corner. Mason played the first 81:46 in goal for the Utes, making five saves in addition to allowing one goal. Emalee Rogers relieved her late in the game for the second straight day. Utah outshot Idaho 23-10, but allowed the Vandals to have a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks after failing to clear some balls on the defensive end. The Utes commited 16 fouls to Idaho's 12. Utah continues its four-game home stand with the first-ever night game at Ute Field against Purdue on Friday at 7:00 p.m. A short fireworks show will follow the game. |
