BYU Defeats Weber State, 3-0 Aquino Scores Hat Trick in Cougar win.
Sept. 2, 2005 Provo, Utah - Freshman Jessica Aquino scored twice in the first half and once in the second to pick up her first collegiate hat trick to help BYU (3-0-0) secure victory over Weber State. "It was a great team effort win for us," said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "I've been really pleased with our effort and attitude. I am pleased with how our players approach the game, wanting to get better each and every game." 2,158 fans were on hand to watch the Cougars in their home opener. The attendance is the fifth highest in BYU history and third highest for home openers. The first few minutes was a tough offensive battle with both teams having point blank opportunities, but neither team able to capitalize. Then freshman Jessica Aquino checked into the game. Almost instantly Aquino received a pass from Annie Zwahlen in the midst of several players, somehow finding room. Her shot soared just past the goalkeeper's outstretched hands. The goal marked the first of the game, as well as the first of career. Aquino then stole the ball from a Weber State player and again shot the ball past the goalie's fingertips. Fourteen seconds later Jaime Rendich Beck dribbled past a Weber State defender, leaving only the goalkeeper between Beck and the goal. She drew the goalie out and then dribbled right in for her first goal of the season. Near the end of the first half, Haylee Cuthbert received the ball 30 yards out and shot a beautiful, high-arching crosskick past the goalie. The third goal of Aquino's career, a header, came at the beginning of the second half off a pass from Bobbi Tillotson. Rockwood was visibly thrilled with Aquino's play and excited she earned a hat trick in only her third game as a collegiate player.
"She had a great practice the last couple of days and was scoring a lot of goals, so we thought she deserved to get into the lineup early," said Rockwood. "Then she went out and scored two goals in thirteen minutes. That's exactly what she's been doing in practice."
The Cougars next game is on Monday against Utah State. Game time is slated for 8 p.m., at South Stadium. |
