Frogs fall to No. 6 Texas A&M, 4-0 TCU sets a new attendance record.
Aug. 28, 2005
FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 6 Texas A&M Aggies handed the TCU Horned Frogs a 4-0 loss in front of a record crowd of 2,200 at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium Sunday afternoon. The Aggie defense stymied the Frog offense for most of the game and the offense put up two scores in each half en route to the win. Ashley Pierret and Katy Buchanan played well in goal, combining to make 11 saves. A&M took control of the game early, keeping the ball deep in the Frogs defensive zone. Less than a minute into the game, the Aggies had a great scoring opportunity that sailed just wide. With all of the pressure, Sara Schneider and Karissa Hill played strong defense, frustrating the Aggie forwards and forcing them into long shots that sailed wide. The pressure by A&M finally paid off for the Aggies in the fifth minute as they took advantage of a direct kick 18 yards out to the left of the goal. Ashlee Pistorius took the kick and buried it in the upper right hand corner of the goal. Pierret kept the deficit at one with an outstanding save in the 13th minute on a tough angle shot by Melissa Garey. The Frogs had a couple of chances to crack the scoreboard towards the end of the half. Casey Glass picked up a ball deep in the offensive zone and rushed in on A&M goalkeeper Kati Jo Spisak. Glass took the shot, but buried it right in Spisak's gut, ending the threat. Five minutes later, Caroline Starns raced down the sideline and sent a cross that just missed its mark. A goal in the final minute of play in the first half by A&M's Suzzette Devloo put the halftime deficit at two and ended Pierret's day. Allison Martino took the direct kick and fed the ball to Devloo, who streaked in and shot the ball past a diving Pierret, who left the game with an injury.
In the second half, the Frogs got a few more chances but were unable to solve the Aggie defense. TCU was awarded two direct kicks in the half just outside of the goal box, but both shots sailed high and wide. The Aggies took a three-goal lead in the 58th minute on Pistorius' second goal of the game. Garey sent a perfect cross to Pistorius on the left side and she headed it past a diving Katy Buchanan for the goal. Garey scored the Aggies final goal of the contest in the 84th minute. Pierret made five saves in her 44 minutes of work, while Buchanan made six stops. The Aggies took 26 shots in all in the match and held the Frogs to just six shots, two on goal. "I was disappointed," head coach Dan Abdalla said. "I felt like we dropped our effort and gave them to much respect. They're a good team, but if we step up, we can play with a team like A&M." The Frogs (1-1-0) will hit the road for the first time in 2005 as they head to Dallas to play Metroplex rival SMU. Match time is slated for 7:00 p.m. |
