Four MWC Women's Golf Teams Earn NCAA Regional Bids BYU, New Mexico, TCU and UNLV all advance to the postseason
April 28, 2008 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - For the second consecutive year, the Mountain West Conference will have four teams represented in the 2008 NCAA Women's Golf Regional, announced Monday by the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Committee. New Mexico earned the automatic berth after winning the conference championship in Albuquerque, N.M., last week and will be joined by BYU, TCU and UNLV. No. 20 New Mexico's appearance at the 2008 East Regional marks the 16th consecutive year the Lobos have made postseason action (every year since regional play was introduced in 1993). The Lobos will be looking for their second consecutive trek to the NCAA Championship, after finishing in 22nd place last year at the LPGA International Legends Golf Course in Daytona Beach, Fla. New Mexico will be led on the UGA Golf Course in Athens, Ga., by sophomore Jodi Ewart, who earned Co-Player of the Year honors in the MWC. No. 36 TCU, which is making its 13th consecutive trip to the NCAA Regionals, will play as the eighth seed in the Central Regional, May 8-10. The Horned Frogs, led by MWC Co-Player of the Year Valentine Derrey, will hope to make their second consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships after finishing 11th last season. This year's Central Regional will be played at the University of Texas Golf Course in Austin, Texas. In the West Regional, which will be played May 8-10 at the Lincoln Hills Golf Club in Lincoln, Calif., BYU earned the No. 9 seed and UNLV will play as the No. 16 seed. No. 30 BYU is making its fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Regionals. The Cougars' appearance in the West Regional marks their 14th NCAA appearance in the last 16 years. BYU is looking to return to the NCAA Championship after finishing tied for 17th in 2007.
No. 45 UNLV is making its sixth-straight NCAA Regional appearance in the just the seven-year history of the program. The Rebels finished 17th at last year's West Regional. Led by MWC Freshman of the Year, Therese Koelbaek, the Rebels hope to return to the NCAA Championship since their last appearance in 2006.
A total of 324 participants have been selected for the regional competition. Of these players, 126 will advance to the championships finals. Eight teams and two individuals will advance from each region. The championships finals will be held May 20-23 at the UNM Championship Golf Course in Albuquerque, N.M., hosted by the University of New Mexico. -mwc- |
