UNLV Captures 2006 MWC Women's Golf Championship UNLV freshman Da Sol Chung wins playoff to capture medalist honors.
April 22, 2006 ST. GEORGE, Utah - Defending champion UNLV battled windy conditions in the final round to claim the top spot at the 2006 Mountain West Conference Golf Championship at Entrada at Snow Canyon in St. George, Utah, on Saturday, April 22. The Rebels now have now three consecutive MWC Women's Golf Championships. UNLV carded a final-round 301 and 72-hole total of 895. New Mexico finished with a final round 302 for a 900 to maintain its second-place slot from round two. BYU shot 303 on the last day and 907 for the championship placing them third in the seven-team field. TCU was fourth with a score of 927 followed by San Diego State fifth (930), Colorado State sixth (934) and Wyoming seventh (954). It took a one-hole playoff to break a three-way tie of freshmen at the top of the standings. Da Sol Chung of UNLV captured the individual title with a birdie on the first playoff hole after firing a final-round 73 giving her a championship total of a six-over 222. New Mexico's Py Bengtsson and Mikaela Backstedt made par in the playoff and both finished the weekend with a six-over 222. Mikala Henzlik of Wyoming finished strong carding the low round of the tournament with a two-under par 70 placing her fourth. For final results in PDF format, click here
