Aztecs pick up first win of season

SAN DIEGO - Junior transfer Jennifer Layton (Sacramento, Calif.) scored all 20 of her points in the second half to lead the San Diego State women's basketball team to a 59-52 victory over UC Davis Friday night at Cox Arena. SDSU, which dressed just eight players for the second consecutive game, improved to 1-1 on the season, while the Aggies fell to 0-3.

Layton made all 10 of her shot attempts in the second half and added eight rebounds for the game.

After UC Davis cut San Diego State's seven-point halftime lead to three with 13:49 remaining, the Aztecs went on a 14-5 run over the next 6:27. Layton made four field goal attempts during the stretch, giving SDSU its biggest lead of the game at 48-36.

The Aggies slowly chipped away at the Aztec lead and got within five points on a Heather Bates jumper with 14 seconds left in the game. On the ensuing possession, Layton sealed the win for SDSU with a breakaway layup.

Junior Shanna Demus (Palmdale, Calif.) also had a good all-around game for the Aztecs, tying career highs in points (12), rebounds (nine) and assists (five). Her four steals was also a career high.

Senior Desiree Johnson (Kahuku, Hawaii) chipped in with 11 points and six rebounds for SDSU, which held UC Davis to just 32.7 percent (16-for-49) shooting for the game.

Junior Kate Eveland (South Lake, Texas) and freshman Quenese Davis (Sacramento, Calif.) each had five assists for the Aztecs, who had 20 assists for first time in a game since Feb. 10, 2005 versus Utah Valley State.

Laura Thomas (12 points), Genevieve Costello (11 points) and Kirsten Commins (10 points) each scored in double-figures to lead the Aggies.

San Diego State will make the short drive west to play city-rival San Diego on Sunday. Channel 4 San Diego will carry the game live from Jenny Craig Pavilion beginning at 2 p.m.
