New Mexico's Kassautzki, TCU's Munch-Soegaard Named Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week

March 6, 2008

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New Mexico's Graeme Kassautzki and TCU's Nina Munch-Soegaard have been named the Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week, respectively. This marks the second career honor for both Kassautzki and Munch-Soegaard.

Kassautzki won all three of the singles matches he finished at the No. 4 singles position last week in helping New Mexico to wins over Sacramento State, No. 61 South Alabama, and No. 37 Old Dominion. After defeating SSU's Holden Ching (7-5, 6-1) and USA's R.J. Nagel (6-4, 7-5), the junior from Vancouver, British Colubmia, collected the Lobos' only triumph in a 4-1 loss to No. 39 Texas Tech by staging a 6-4, 6-3 upset of 82nd-ranked Ilya Babinciuc. In doubles action, Kassautzki and freshman Joe Wood dropped a narrow 8-7 (7-4) decision to SSU's Artur Klimenka and Sven-David Rueff and won their match against South Alabama by default.

Munch-Soegaard defeated two nationally-ranked opponents in singles play and a ranked doubles duo while registering a 5-1 overall mark last week in leading the No. 22 Horned Frogs to wins over No. 62 SMU and No. 73 Texas Tech. The sophomore from Amarillo, Texas, routed No. 73 Natalia (6-1, 6-3) at the top singles position and teamed with freshman Katariina Tuohimaa to topple SUM's 38th-ranked pair of Briceno and Tokarieva by a score of 8-3 to clinch the doubles point in the match. After winning both singles and doubles contests against No. 73 Texas Tech on Saturday, Munch-Soegaard stunned No. 11 Melanie Gloria of Fresno State on Monday (6-3, 3-6, 6-3). Munch-Soegaard's win brought the Horned Frogs within 3-2 in a match that TCU would end up dropping in a third-set tiebreaker.
