UNLV'S Elliot Wronski and Elena Gantcheva Sweep MWC Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week Honors
Feb. 6, 2008 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNLV's Elliot Wronski and Elena Gantcheva have been named the Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week, respectively. Wronski collects his fourth weekly honor, while Gantcheva becomes the only women's tennis player in MWC history to earn weekly accolades seven times in her career. Wronski, a product of Cheltenham, England, was a combined 4-0 at the No. 1 singles and doubles positions while helping UNLV to wins over Southern Miss and New Mexico State last week. In singles play, the junior rallied to beat USM's Andrew Poole (6-7, 6-2, 6-1) on Friday and then cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 victory over NMSU's Gustave Diep on Saturday. In doubles action, Wronski paired with junior Wesley Burrows to defeat USM's Poole/Markus Wessinghage (8-1) and NMSU's Diep/Jim Brouleau (8-2).
Gantcheva, ranked 30th nationally, pulled off one of the biggest upsets of her career by becoming the first Lady Rebel to defeat Stanford's top singles player on the Cardinal's home courts. Gantcheva swept 21st-ranked Jessica Nguyen (6-2, 7-6) to score UNLV's only point in a 6-1 loss to the second-ranked Cardinal in Palo Alto. The win improved Gantcheva's record to 14-6 on the year and marked her fourth victory this season over a player currently ranked in the top 50 nationally. The senior from Sofia, Bulgaria, has 97 career wins, putting her within striking distance of becoming just the third Lady Rebel in school history to reach 100 singles wins for her career.
