COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -
San Diego State's Bartosz Golas and Utah's Elizabeth Ferris have been named the Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week, respectively.
A junior from Munich, Germany, Golas went a combined 6-1 in his first action for the Aztecs last week. At the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Indian Wells, Calif., Golas defeated Arizona's Peter Zimmer (6-4, 4-6, 6-4) in the Round of 16 before falling to UCLA's Jeremy Drean (4-6, 6-2, 4-6) in quarterfinal action. He teamed with sophomore Achim Ceban to capture the main draw doubles crown at the NCTC, defeating three sets of opponents, including tandems from 32nd-ranked Rice and No. 9 UCLA, en route to the title. Following the tournament's completion, SDSU opened its dual-match season against UC Riverside as Golas helped the 50th-ranked Aztecs to their third-straight opening-day victory with a 7-0 shutout of the Highlanders. Golas was the first one off the court in both his matches at the No. 1 position, pairing again with Ceban to defeat Joe Cartledge and John Park (8-4) in doubles action before dispatching Cartledge in straight sets (6-1, 6-2) in singles play.
A senior from Anaheim, Calif., Ferris opened the spring season in dramatic fashion, pulling off a 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 upset of the nation's top-ranked player, Arkansas' Aureliji Miseviciute, at No. 1 singles in Utah's dual match with the Lady Razorbacks. At the time of the contest, Miseviciute was fresh off winning the singles crown at the National Indoor Championship.
