USAFA, Colo. - UNLV rallied from losing the doubles point to win four straight singles matches and defeat BYU, 4-1, to capture the 2007 Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Championship Saturday in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Rebels, seeded third at the tournament, evened their record at 13-13 and earned the league's automatic bid to the 2007 NCAA Tournament. This is the first MWC men's tennis championship for UNLV in the eight-year history of the conference. After defeating No. 4 seed New Mexico on Thursday and No. 1 seed San Diego State on Friday, the fifth-seeded Cougars opened Saturday's match by winning two of the three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead. Their No. 2 team of Chip Hand and Jonathan Sanchez opened with an 8-3 victory over Jonathan Hooper and Wesley Burrows. UNLV evened it up at the No. 1 position when Elliot Wronski and Brett Hunter downed James Ludlow and Dominik Kaufhold, 8-5, setting up the deciding match at the No. 3 spot. BYU took the point when Cassidy Mears and Cale Planck defeated Slavko Bijelica and David Campbell, 8-6. The momentum shifted in singles play, however, as UNLV won four matches, all in straight sets. Bijelica evened the team match at 1-all by winning the No. 2 match over Hand, 7-5, 6-1, followed by Wronski winning the No. 1 match, 7-6(5), 6-3 over James Ludlow. Wronski, ranked 71st in the country, improved to 19-11 overall this season. Hunter made it 3-0 with a 6-2, 7-5 decision over Sanchez at the No. 4 spot and Luca Barlocci sealed the team win by defeating Planck, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 6. The two remaining matches were halted in the second set. With the loss, BYU had its four-match winning streak snapped and fell to 14-14. No. 3 UNLV 4, No. 5 BYU 1
