SDSU Men's Golf Receives 10th Straight NCAA Regional Bid Aztecs to compete in West Regional, May 15-17, in Bremerton, Wash.
May 5, 2008
INDIANAPOLIS - San Diego State earned a bid to the NCAA men's golf regional for the 10th consecutive year when the Aztecs were selected to compete in the West Regional championships, May 15-17, in Bremerton, Wash., as announced by the NCAA on Monday. SDSU received the No. 11 seed out of 27 teams in the West Regional, which will be contested on the 7,073-yard, par-72 Olympic Course at Gold Mountain Golf Club. The Aztecs are among 81 NCAA Division I schools invited to play in one of three regional events. The other two regional tournaments will be held concurrently in Chattanooga, Tenn., (East) and Columbus, Ohio (Central). The West Regional will consist of 54 holes over a three-day period with 18 holes conducted each day. The top 10 teams and two individuals not on advancing teams will move on from each regional to the championship finals, which will be held May 28-31 on the Karsten Course at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Ind. SDSU is making its 13th appearance in the tournament since the field was expanded to include regional competition in 1989 and will be looking to advance to the national championships for the 19th time in school history. The Aztecs have advanced to the championship series three times (1999, 2003 and 2005) since the regional format made its debut. SDSU is already familiar with the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain, having played there last October at the Husky Invitational. Freshman Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) was the Aztecs' top finisher in the event after tying for 12th out of 69 individuals with a 3-over-par 147. As a team, San Diego State tied for fifth out of 12 schools with a 21-over 597 in the two-round, rain-shortened tournament.
