May 5, 2008

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men's golf team, ranked No. 17 in the nation in Golfstat's rankings, has been awarded the sixth seed at the NCAA West Regional, which will be played at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash., beginning Thursday, May 15, the NCAA announced Monday.

The invitation marks UNLV's 20th straight appearance in a NCAA Regional.

"It is a nice run, obviously, and it is a nice accomplishment to be going to our 20th straight NCAA tournament," UNLV head coach Dwaine Knight said. "We are happy to be out west. Looking at the field, it looks like it is a pretty stacked regional with a lot of really good teams. At this time of year though, no matter where you are at, you have to play well to keep playing."

Three regional tournaments, encompassing the current nine sub-regions, will be played May 15-17. A total of 27 teams and six individuals not on selected teams were assigned to each regional site. The other regional sites are the Council Fire Golf Club (East), in Chattanooga, Tenn., and the Scarlet Golf Course (Central) in Columbus, Ohio.

Ten teams and two individuals not on advancing teams will move on from each regional to the championship finals.

The NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship will be conducted May 28-31 at Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex-The Kampen Course, in West Lafayette, Ind.

Purdue is the host institution for this year's championship.

Listed below are the teams and individuals selected to participate in the West Regional. Teams winning automatic qualification are designated by their conferences in parenthesis.

UNLV finished fourth at the Mountain West Conference Championship, April 24-26, in its last outing. UNLV has won two tournaments this season and has turned in nine straight top-five finishes dating back to September. Rebel sophomore Eddie Olson shot a final-round 1-under-par 70 and claimed the individual title at the league championship, finishing three shots ahead of the field and tying the MWC Championship record for margin of victory.
