Mountain West Announces 2005 All-Conference Football Awards

New Mexico's Dontrell Moore, Utah's Eric Weddle and TCU's Aaron Brown garner individual accolades

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Mountain West Conference announced the 2005 All-Conference football teams and individual award winners today as selected by the coaches and media panel. New Mexico tailback DonTrell Moore has been named Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year and Utah defensive back Eric Weddle selected as Defensive Player of the Year. Tailback Aaron Brown of TCU was honored as Freshman of the Year and TCU's Gary Patterson as Coach of the Year.

Offensive Player of the Year - DonTrell Moore, Sr., TB, New Mexico
+ New Mexico's first Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year. The last Lobo to garner conference offensive player of the year honors was Graham Leigh in 1997.
+ The third running back since the inception of the MWC to be named Offensive Player of the Year (1999-Kevin McDougal, Colorado State/2001-Luke Staley, BYU).
+ The second-ever New Mexico running back to receive conference Offensive Player of the Year honors (Mike Williams was co-MVP of the WAC in 1978).

Defensive Player of the Year - Eric Weddle, Jr., DB, Utah
+ The third player from Utah to be named MWC Defensive Player of the Year (John Frank-1999/Morgan Scalley -2004-co-player).
+ Became the fourth defensive back in seven years to earn MWC Defensive Player of the Year honors. He is also the second junior to receive the defensive award (Kirk Morrison, SDSU-2003).

Freshman of the Year - Aaron Brown, TB, TCU
+ The second freshman of the year honoree in Horned Frog history. Tailback Lonta Hobbs earned the award in 2002 when TCU was a member of Conference USA.
+ Is the fifth running back to garner MWC Freshman of the Year honors.

 

 

Coach of the Year - Gary Patterson, TCU
+ Selected as conference coach of the year for the second time in his career. He was voted C-USA Coach of the Year in 2002 after leading the Frogs to a 10-2 overall record.

Notables
+ New Mexico tailback DonTrell Moore was the only unanimous first-team selection.
+ Three student-athletes were repeat first-team all-Conference selections in 2005. New Mexico's DonTrell Moore became the first player in Mountain West history to be named first-team all-conference four straight years. Offensive lineman Ryan Cook of New Mexico is a three-time honoree, while Utah defensive lineman Steve Fifita is a two-time award recipient.
+ Linebacker Jason Phillips of TCU was the lone freshman selected to one of the all-conference teams (second team). Phillips is the first freshman defensive player in league history to be selected to either the first or second team. Overall, he is just the fourth freshman to make an all-conference team (DonTrell Moore, TB, New Mexico-2002 (first-team)/Lynell Hamilton, RB, San Diego State-2003 (first-team), Hoost Marsh, KR, Wyoming-2004 (first-team).
+ John Beck (QB-BYU), Curtis Brown (RB-BYU), Jesse Boone (OL-Utah), Gabriel Fulbright (DB-New Mexico) and Eric Weddle (DB-Utah) are all first-team selections in 2005. All five players were second team honorees in 2004.
+ Of the 51 first and second-team selections, 31 were seniors, 10 juniors, nine sophomores and one freshman. The first team had 15 seniors, six juniors and four sophomores.
+ TCU placed the most players on the two all-conference teams with 12 selections (six on both first and second teams). Utah was next with nine, followed by BYU and New Mexico with seven and San Diego State with five. New Mexico had the most first-team selections with seven, followed by TCU with six and Utah with five.
