Mountain West Conference Names Football Players of the Week

BYU RB Unga and DL Jorgensen, SDSU PK Palmer honored

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Harvey Unga and Jan Jorgensen (BYU) and Garrett Palmer (SDSU) are Mountain West Conference Players of the Week for games through Dec. 1. Unga earns the Offensive Player of the Week honor, while Jorgensen collects the Defensive Player award, and Palmer earns Special Teams recognition. Unga collects his third player of the week award of the season and of his career, while Palmer is presented with his first weekly accolade of the season and fourth of his career. Jorgensen picks up his first career weekly honor.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

HARVEY UNGA, BYU
Freshman, RB, Provo, Utah/Timpview HS

Harvey Unga ran for 161 yards on 23 carries (7.0 avg.) and had a career-high four-touchdown performance in the Cougars' 48-27 victory over San Diego State on Saturday. Unga was also credited with three receptions for 29 yards to total 190 all-purpose yards in the contest. His 24 points against the Aztecs set the MWC single-game record for scoring by a freshman. The game marked Unga's third straight 100-yard rushing performance and seventh overall this season, a BYU freshman record. Unga has rushed for 1,211 yards in 2007, marking the most yards for a BYU player since Doak Walker Award-winner Luke Staley racked up 1,582 yards during the 2001 campaign. Unga's single-season rushing mark currently ranks fourth all-time in BYU history. He needs just six yards to become the Mountain West Conference's all-time leading freshman rusher.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

JAN JORGENSEN, BYU
Sophomore, Defensive Lineman, Helper, Utah/Carbon HS

Jan Jorgensen finished with a team-leading seven tackles, including five solo stops and a sack, in the Cougars' 48-27 win over San Diego State. Jorgensen now leads the league with 11.5 sacks on the season. The Helper, Utah, native anchored a defensive until that held the Aztecs to just 68 yards rushing. Eliminating the 61 yards rushing by quarterback Kevin O'Connell, the BYU defense allowed just seven yards rushing on the night. The game marked the 12th straight time the Cougars have not allowed a 100-yard rusher.

 

 

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

GARRETT PALMER, SAN DIEGO STATE
Senior, Place Kicker, Rialto, California/Eisenhower HS

Garrett Palmer was 2-for-2 in field goal attempts against the Cougars, connecting from 40 and 41 yards. He now has 17 career field goals of 40 or more yards. He made his final eight attempts in the 2007 season, finishing with a 13-for-15 mark overall. He has now kicked two or more 40-yard field goals in the same game a total of five times in his career, including earlier this year at ASU. Palmer was good on his last six attempts from 40 or more yards on the season.
