MWC Announces Student-Athlete of the Year Award Winners
BYU's Lindsey Metcalf, Utah's Morgan Scalley net honors

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- BYU's Lindsey Metcalf and Utah's Morgan Scalley were honored as the Mountain West Conference Female and Male Student-Athletes of the Year, respectively.
Established by the Mountain West Conference Joint Council in 1999, the Student-Athlete of the Year award is the highest honor presented to a student-athlete by the conference. The award is bestowed annually to the male and female who best exemplify the term "student-athlete" by achieving excellence in academics, community involvement and athletics. Criteria for the Student-Athlete of the Year award requires that nominees demonstrate leadership, character and conduct on and off the playing field. In addition to superior athletic achievement, candidates must have a minimum 3.5 grade point average. In conjunction with Cooper Tires and Worldspan, the winners receive a $2500 post-graduate scholarship.

METCALF BIO
Lindsey Metcalf, an Early Childhood Education major/Management, Teaching English as a Second Language minor, is from Orem, Utah. She is an ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America selection, a two-time Academic All-District selection and a four-year letterwinner in volleyball and indoor and outdoor track and field. A two-time MWC Scholar Athlete award winner and MWC All-Academic team member, Metcalf carried a 3.95 grade point average in her major, while serving as the volleyball team captain and women's indoor and outdoor track and field ad hoc team captain her senior season of each respective sport. A six-time All-American in track and field, Metcalf helped the Cougars to four indoor conference titles and three outdoor conference crowns, winning six individual high jump titles in the process. In NCAA Championship competition, she finished in the top-12 in the high jump each year she competed, including three top-five finishes. As an all-conference performer in volleyball, Metcalf participated in two NCAA Tournaments (2001 and 2003) with the Cougars. A winter 2004 Dean's List honoree, Metcalf's extracurricular activities included being a member of the BYU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, a spokeswoman for the Cougar Athletic Department on campus diversity, a Red Ribbon Week volunteer and numerous church-based activities.
SCALLEY BIO
Morgan Scalley, a Mass Communication major/German minor, from Salt Lake City, Utah, is one of the most decorated student-athletes in Mountain West Conference history. He is a four-time MWC Scholar Athlete award winner and MWC All-Academic team member. In addition, Scalley is a three-time ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District team member (2002, 2003 and 2004), a two-time first-team ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America selection (2003 and 2004), as well as a four-year letterwinner and three-time all-Mountain West Conference performer as a defensive back for the Utah football team. Scalley, a 2004 team captain, helped Utah to a perfect 12-0 record and a No. 4 final national ranking, garnering 2004 MWC Co-Defensive Player of the Year and numerous All-American accolades in the process. A 2004 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient, American Football Coaches Association 2004 Good Works Team member and winner of the inaugural Pat Tillman Award, which honors character, intelligence, sportsmanship and service, he graduated as a junior in 2004 with a 3.90 grade point average. He is currently working toward a Master of Business Administration degree in Mass Communications. In addition to his athletic achievements, Scalley was active in numerous school and community affairs. On campus, he was the president of the Utah Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, a member of the Student-Athlete Mentors Organization, the NCAA Certification Steering Committee, the Ute Football Team's Leadership Committee and the University of Utah's representative on the Mountain West Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. In the community, Scalley spent time volunteering for numerous organizations, including the Road Home Homeless Shelter and Habitat for Humanity, and helped raise money to provide vaccines for children of the island of Bengal.
