Wyoming's Novacek Elected to The NFF College Football Hall of Fame

May 1, 2008

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Former Wyoming tight end Jay Novacek is among the 15 individuals representing the 2008 College Football Hall of Fame Class, the National Football Foundation (NFF) and Hall of Fame announced on Thursday.

Novacek, who played at Wyoming from 1982-84, is the second Cowboy inducted in the College Football Hall of Fame and 18th former student-athlete from an MWC institution to earn such distinction. A Consensus All-American in 1984, he still holds the NCAA record for highest average gain per reception by a tight end in a single season (22.6 yards per reception in 1984). Novacek amassed 83 receptions for 1,536 yards and 10 touchdowns in his three-year career. The Martin, S.D. native also earned All-America honors in track and field in 1984, placing fourth at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in the decathlon.

Selected in the sixth round of the 1985 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals, Novacek played 12 seasons in the NFL. He went on to win three Super Bowls with the Dallas Cowboys at the conclusion of the 1992, 1993 and 1995 seasons. He was twice named All-Pro (1991 and 1992), earned All-NFC honors three times (1991, 1992 and 1995) and made five consecutive Pro Bowl appearances (1991-95).

The 2008 College Football Hall of Fame Bowl Subdivision (FBS) Class will be inducted at the NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 9, 2008, at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. The class will be officially enshrined at the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Ind., during ceremonies in the summer of 2009.
